Saarland Greens today presented an improved nonsmoker protection bill in the Landtag. This includes a general smoking ban in all Saarland inns and pubs. Before that, numerous exceptions existed so that about 80 % of the inns still allowed smoking. Those execptions are now to be omitted. Claudia Willger-Lambert, Green representative in the state parliament, characterized them as “counterproductive”.
The Greens’ party leader Hubert Ulrich told SR that the law won’t have any negative effect for the innkeepers. An “inn dying”, as it is feared by the inn lobby Dehoga, will not take place, Ulrich said. The Social Democrats and the Leftists (Linke) have a completely different opinion. Leftist state party leader Linsler called the bill a “nonsmoking force law”. The state parliament opposition fears that up to 100 workplaces might get lost. The Liberal Democrats (FDP) asked for a special protection for innkeepers who had invested in special smoker rooms

Finally, Saarland’s nonsmoker protection gets the same status it has in other countries like France and Italy.
The reactions of smokers and inn lobby are comprehensible, as the human being has always been a creature of habit. But at the same time, their criticism is not fair: Until this very day, nonsmoking inn guests were forced to smoke due to the omnipresent cigarette smoke. This will finally change now, and it will uncover another problem innkeepers have ruled out for a long time: the prices for drinks. Coke and beer are ways too expensive, the prices have to be cut. This will certainly lead to one or two pubs going out of business, but the job cuts feared by Dehoga are quite unlikely. And it may be that the innkeepers now start thinking seriously about how to keep their guests at the bar.

Ich bin Gastronom. Zum Thema zu hohe Getränkepreise möchte ich sagen, dass wir Gastronomen mit diesen Getränkepreisen unser Personal, die Energiekosten, Miete, den Einkauf und letzlich die Steuern bezahlen müssen. Jahr für Jahr werden unsere Spannen dabei geringer, da wir uns gar nicht trauen, unsere Kostenerhöhungen 1:1 an den Kunden weiterzugeben. Wir wissen genau, dass dann noch weniger Kunden kommen.
Wenn nun die Raucher teilweise wegbleiben, sei es auch nur übergangsweise, werden einige Gastronomen zumachen müssen. An alle, die darüber nur die Achseln zucken – hier geht es um wirtschaftliche Existenzen, die Insolvenzsteller werden dadurch zu Harz 4 Empfängern, was sehr ungerecht ist, da die meisten dieser Gastronomen zumeist in Ihrer Selbständigkeit täglich über 12 Stunden gearbeitet haben und nun vor den Scherben stehen. Da ist Schadensfreude, Gleichgültigkeit oder Häme völlig fehl am Platz.

es hat nichts mit Gleichgültigkeit oder Häme zu tun, wenn hier einige Gastwirte – nicht alle – kritisiert werden. Natürlich stehen hinter den Lokalen immer Existenzen, und natürlich haben Gastwirte auch steigende Kosten – wie wir alle. Aber warum sollte ein strikter Nichtraucherschutz, der in Frankreich, Italien und anderen Ländern bestens funktioniert, in Deutschland plötzlich zum großen Kneipensterben führen? Wenn hier alle Kneipenbesitzer an einem Strang ziehen, wird das auch funktionieren.
